Postpartum 6 week check

6 weeks after delivery everyone has a scheduled check up with your midwife/OBGYN.


At this check up they might:

-Check that any tearing is healing well (including episiotomy)

-Make sure your uterus is healthy and returning back to its normal size

-Do a Pap smear

-Check for mastitis (blocked milk ducts)

-Check general health

-Screen mental health

- Give you clearance to return to sex and return to exercise


HOLD UP!

What magically changes at 6 weeks that enables you to go back to all exercise? What about pelvic floor muscle strength, global muscle strength, breathing mechanics, diastasis rectus ect?


Following your 6 week check up with your OBGYN or Midwife, everyone should attend a 6 week post partum check up with a Pelvic PT. The aim of the 6 week check is to assess your physical state postpartum and make a plan to achieve your goals.


At your appointment we will first ask you lots of questions about your

-Birth story

-Past medical history

-Bowel health

-Bladder health

-Sexual health

-Support at home

-Sleep

-Mental health


After we chat, we will go into an objective assessment which may include the following:

-Orthopaedic assessment looking at posture, strength, function, breath and investigating any pain you may have

-Check for diastasis rectus

-Pelvic floor assessment: this can be internal or external or none- depending on what you are comfortable with. We are checking for:

-Healing of any scars

-Levator ani avulsion

-Prolapse

-Pelvic floor muscle strength, endurance, coordination, and tone


🤍Most importantly we will talk about YOUR GOALS!


Answer any and all questions you have about bowel, bladder, sexual, physical health.
