6 weeks after delivery everyone has a scheduled check up with your midwife/OBGYN.
At this check up they might:
-Check that any tearing is healing well (including episiotomy)
-Make sure your uterus is healthy and returning back to its normal size
-Do a Pap smear
-Check for mastitis (blocked milk ducts)
-Check general health
-Screen mental health
- Give you clearance to return to sex and return to exercise
HOLD UP!
What magically changes at 6 weeks that enables you to go back to all exercise? What about pelvic floor muscle strength, global muscle strength, breathing mechanics, diastasis rectus ect?
Following your 6 week check up with your OBGYN or Midwife, everyone should attend a 6 week post partum check up with a Pelvic PT. The aim of the 6 week check is to assess your physical state postpartum and make a plan to achieve your goals.
At your appointment we will first ask you lots of questions about your
-Birth story
-Past medical history
-Bowel health
-Bladder health
-Sexual health
-Support at home
-Sleep
-Mental health
After we chat, we will go into an objective assessment which may include the following:
-Orthopaedic assessment looking at posture, strength, function, breath and investigating any pain you may have
-Check for diastasis rectus
-Pelvic floor assessment: this can be internal or external or none- depending on what you are comfortable with. We are checking for:
-Healing of any scars
-Levator ani avulsion
-Prolapse
-Pelvic floor muscle strength, endurance, coordination, and tone
🤍Most importantly we will talk about YOUR GOALS!
Answer any and all questions you have about bowel, bladder, sexual, physical health.
🤍Make a plan to get you back to your goals!!!
